Simply defined, grief is the normal and natural reaction to significant emotional loss of any kind. It is the conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior.
Conflicting feelings are opposing emotional responses resulting from the same loss, like pain and relief. For example, when someone dies after suffering a long illness, those left behind may feel emotional pain knowing they can no longer see or touch the person. At the same time, they may feel a sense of relief knowing that the person’s suffering is over.
Grief is individual and unique. As every relationship is different, so are the thoughts and feelings each person has about the relationship that has been altered by any of the following:
Did a death, divorce,
or the end of a romantic relationship cause it? Or was it caused by any of the more than forty other losses as shown above that a person might experience? Regardless of the cause, you
know how you feel, and it probably isn't good.
